Recently the freebie word has become quite common. Hon’ble Supreme Court has also given its remark about so called Freebie culture and asked whether it is affecting the economic health of the nation or not. Commonly freebie culture is considered as the threat to economy of the nation.

What is Freebie Politics / Freebie Culture

In context of Indian Politics, attracting the voter with assorted things and luring promises to cast their votes in favour is called Freebie Politics. There is very little difference between social welfare and freebie Culture; the people who are on the top of the economic distribution pyramid, consider the people who are at lower side of the pyramid as Freebie, on the other hand some people call these things basic amenities which should be provided by the state.

In 1967 DMK founder promised Rs. 1 per KG Rice if his party was elected, this was the beginning of freebie politics which getting more popularity in Indian Politics and political parties accelerated this from rice to laptop, mobile, Television, free electricity, free water etc.

Is Freebie Politics Good?

As it is mentioned in Directive Principal of States that uplifting the living standard or providing basic amenities to the citizens is state’s Duty. Western countries like America, United Kingdom, France etc. amenities such as electricity, health insurance, financial help for the child care, Education etc. are considered as the Basic amenities which are provided free by the State, then why in India it is Called Freebie Culture not as a social welfare?

The people who reside on the top of the economic distribution pyramid, are getting the best Education, Healthcare facilities and other things, on the other hand if the people beneath them may get basic education and health assistance which are promised and provide by the Government, how it is freebie culture? This should not be considered as freebie. Government should provide good education, medical service and other various amenities to uplifted the living standard of a Lower Middle class or Lower Class family and this should be considered freebie but it is basic amenities that every citizen should get.

According to Indian constitution, the Right to Education is a Fundamental right which must be full filled by the Government. All the citizens are equal as per the constitution but distribution of resources is unequal. This fact is known by everyone, in this case, if the people on the bottom of economic distribution pyramid, get some basic amenities free of cost, should not be considered Freebies. States must provide basic amenities to the Citizens who are really needy so that they will also become economic empowered. Educated and Healthy citizen is an asset to the nation who would help to make India Atamnirbhar.

Is Freebie Culture Bad?

If we think from economic perspective, providing things to the citizen without any cost may affect the economic Health of the State Government or Central Government. Many time actual needy person don’t get the benefits of the scheme, but other enjoy the most, as choosing the right section of the population is very tough work due to various reason. Choosing the right beneficiary is very important which may also reduce the budget of scheme.

Providing or promising basic things like Grain, Rice, Education Medical Assistance are still ok but political parties go to the next level and promise for luxury things like laptop mobile scooter which are not basic amentias for sure.

Fiscal Deficit is another rising concern and providing things without any cost might affect growing fiscal deficit.

Freebie Culture: Way forward

In India approx. 10% people are holding approx. 77% Wealth, to ensure the equal distribution of resources and welfare of the citizens, taxed need to be revised.

Instead of cutting down the expenditure on providing basic amenities,  government should focus on the ways to earn more.

This is the duty of the State to ensure the equal distribution of the resources as equality is a sign of an Ideal Nation,  As Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar said ”Equality may be a fiction but nonetheless one must accept it as a governing principle.” Providing or promising for basic things are not an Act of  encouraging the Freebies culture but promising imposable or fictional things is an Act of that encouraging the Freebies mind set in politics and public.
